What Causes Mould?
Mould growth is caused by excessive moisture in the air of the surrounding environment. This excess moisture is usually caused by things such as leaking pipes, flooding and/or improper ventilation. Mould spores thrive on moisture as it is the key element in mould growth. Due to this, the mould spores have become extremely good at searching for and finding moisture in even the most unusual places. This causes mould to spread very rapidly throughout dark, moist spaces that do not receive proper ventilation.
Many people underestimate the rate at which mould patches will spread, often ignoring small mould problems assuming that they have plenty of time to get them under control. By doing this they are creating a much bigger problem for them selves in the long run, and potentially harming themselves and their family if the mould is in fact toxic (e.g. Black Mould).
OUR SERVICES
HOW DO YOU REMOVE MOULD?
INSPECTION
One of our Mould Accredited Technicians will attend your property to conduct a visual inspection to begin with to determine the extent of the mould contamination. We will firstly discuss with you your concerns and any history of the property such as if there maybe any previous or current water leaks or water ingress we should know about. We will then commence the assessment by moisture testing, humidity testing and thermal imaging the surfaces to determine any underlying moisture issues that can’t be seen with a naked eye. Once we have identified that damage and cause, we will provide a detailed report and scope of works with recommendations to remediate the property and keep the mould from reproducing.
CORRECTION
As part of our service we will advise you of the steps that are important to stop any further moisture or water ingress as this is very important to stop any food source of moisture to stop mould growth. This maybe such things as roof leaks, burst pipes, leaking pipes, leaking windows, failed waterproofing, use of dehumidifiers to regulate high humidity. Each customer will need a specific course of action for mould removal based on their situation, so the specifics of each job will be arranged once the initial inspection is complete.
REMOVAL
The remediation process starts with setting up of negative air machines or air scrubbers to collect all airborne contaminants to provide a safer environment for our technicians to remediate your home. Secondly any water or mould damaged porous or semi porous materials will be removed and disposed of such as plasterboard or fibro wall or ceiling sheeting, carpet and underlay, smooth edge, laminate flooring etc. The third stage is to HEPA vacuum all affected surfaces to remove all surface spores to prevent any further airborne contamination. The fourth stage is to treat all affected surfaces by applying an anti-microbial solution to the surface and damp wipe with a micro fibre cloth or mop. This process will ensure that all surface mould contamination has not only been killed but more importantly removed. The fifth and final stage is call fogging. This is a micro mist treatment that kills all airborne contaminants and surface contaminants that we can’t get to or see with a naked eye. This procedure is only affective provided air scrubbers are used during the process to suck up all spores as we are killing them because there is no point fogging only to kill the spores and leave them on the floor or contents because dead spores still release mycotoxins the same as live mould spores. The key to Mould Removal is just that, REMOVAL. Not Killing.
DRY OUT
If moisture levels within the property after say a flood or water leak remain elevated or high, we will provide and set up structural drying equipment such as dehumidifiers, air movers and air scrubbers to commence the stuctural drying process to return the moisture levels to within allowable limits under 15%. If structural drying is not completed or completed correctly and moisture remains higher then 15% then moisture vapours will still be present in the air and therefore can be a food source for further mould growth. Mould will start to redevelop within 48-72 hours with moisture levels above 15%.
PREVENTION
To ensure that the mould does not come back, the original root cause of the mould growth must be rectified. As each case is unique, we will advise you on the process that needs to be undertaken in order to achieve this on a case by case basis. Often it will involve increasing ventilation, drainage improvements, dehumidifiers etc.
